Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY 2023) - Hadhramout

The LCOY Yemen Second Edition, a dynamic gathering of passionate youth, convened in Mukalla, Hadramaut, from November 21 to 22, 2023. With a shared commitment to addressing climate change, 70 young men and women from across Hadramaut engaged in thought-provoking discussions with 23 experts from diverse environmental and climate fields. The dedicated efforts of 30 volunteers ensured the success of the event, which featured an array of engaging activities: 3 Panel Discussions. 2 Workshops. 2 Youth-Led eco-friendly project Showcases . The inaugural session explored Yemen's current climate policies, adaptation strategies, environmental protection laws, international climate action programs and projects, and the key challenges posed by climate change in Yemen. These include the scarcity of meteorological data, limited agricultural meteorological data, and other related concerns. The second session delved into the concept of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of youth and civil society organizations in achieving them. Participants emphasized the importance of reshaping the set of goals that Yemen needs and prioritizing them through concerted efforts of civil society organizations to find solutions and develop plans to achieve the most critical SDGs in Yemen, such as eradicating poverty and addressing health and energy issues. Workgroups examined the current status of renewable energy initiatives in Yemen, explored the challenges and opportunities in the renewable energy sector, formulated policy recommendations for adopting renewable energy and presented them to specialists. Additionally, they discussed the role of civil society organizations in addressing climate change and adaptation strategies, and reviewed mud architecture and investment opportunities. Workgroups also explored the role of youth in advocating for climate action, identified effective youth-led environmental initiatives, and promoted youth voices in climate policymaking, showcasing their recommendations.
