Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY 2023) - Virtually
The third edition of the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change LCOY Yemen convened virtually on Zoom on November 23, 2023. The conference aimed to bring together young people to discuss climate change issues and their crucial role in addressing them.
50 enthusiastic young men and women from across the Arab world participated in the conference, engaging with 10 experts from various environmental and climate fields to discuss climate change issues and the vital role of youth in tackling them.
The virtual conference's first session delved into the current state of climate policy, environmental challenges and vulnerabilities in the region, climate resilience-related policy initiatives and strategies, and the role of international cooperation and partnerships. The second session explored the types of climate disasters and their impacts, the challenges and improvements in emergency response, followed by the third session, which focused on the role of youth in climate action and advocacy, youth-led climate initiatives in Yemen, and strategies for amplifying youth voices in climate policymaking.
Moving on, the fourth session explored innovative approaches to climate change education and awareness raising in Yemen. The fifth session introduced waste management and the circular economy, discussed current waste management challenges, showcased examples of circular economy initiatives in waste management, and the sixth session explored effective strategies for amplifying youth voices and empowering youth participation.
The seventh session facilitated knowledge exchange on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting the progress made on SDGs in Yemen. The eighth session defined climate justice, opened discussions on the role of youth in achieving it, and exchanged examples of key climate justice initiatives. Finally, the conference concluded by identifying the vulnerabilities and impacts facing the world due to climate agreements, existing agreements, challenges, and gaps hindering the achievement of climate justice. It also explored opportunities and solutions available to enhance Yemen's participation in international climate agreements.
LCOY Yemen Third Edition provided a valuable platform for young people to engage with experts, share experiences, and develop concrete action plans to address climate change in Yemen. It emphasized the critical role of youth in driving climate action and achieving a sustainable future for the region.
