Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY 2024) - Socotra

Socotra, Yemen – Wednesday, October 30, 2024 – The activities of the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY 2024) kicked off in Socotra Archipelago Governorate. This marks its second edition in Yemen under the slogan "Our Green Path." This conference is part of a series of 3 conferences being held in Socotra and Marib, in addition to a virtual version. This initiative aims to spread awareness about climate concepts and introduce the upcoming COP29 Climate Summit, scheduled for mid-November 2024 in Azerbaijan, in addition to the recommendations that the conference is expected to issue and follow up on in the future. The conference was jointly organized by the Socotra Wildlife Society and "Woman Impact" Foundation, under the patronage of the Humanitarian Aid and Development Organization (HAD), and with strategic sponsorship from the Food for Humanity Foundation. In his speech, the Undersecretary of Socotra Governorate, Raed Al-Juraibi, emphasized the importance of understanding climate change and its impacts, highlighting the necessity of directing the youth's ideas and efforts towards leading and creating a bright future for this part of the homeland. On her part, the Director of Social Affairs and Labor in Socotra, Haifa Bazyad, noted in her speech that Socotra has recently been exposed to cyclones, expressing hope that such conferences and events will be effective in disaster reduction, early warning enhancement, climate security, and peace sustainability. The conference witnessed a significant attendance of over 60 participants from Socotra's youth, over two days, with morning and evening sessions. Attendees discussed several scientific papers and in-depth discussion sessions on climate change. The conference sessions and workshops covered topics including sustainable agriculture and its importance in confronting climate change, climate change and its impact on marine and terrestrial biodiversity, along with understanding the impact of climate change in Socotra, vulnerability assessment, and community-level planning. The sessions also addressed the impact of climate change on livelihoods, and a training workshop and success story on the first hydroponics experiment in Socotra were presented. This resulted in a shared vision for future work aimed at raising environmental awareness among all segments of society and actively contributing to protecting Socotra's unique biodiversity. The event also included numerous interventions and lectures that focused on how to address the significant challenges threatening the archipelago's biodiversity. At the conclusion of the second day, participants made a field visit to the Dehamri Reserve, located in the northeastern part of Socotra Island. This step underscored the importance of linking theoretical knowledge with practical reality and enhancing youth's understanding of the importance of protecting these valuable natural reserves. Participants learned firsthand about the challenges facing the reserve, most notably the damage caused by cyclones, in a step that strengthens youth's connection to their environment and motivates them to work on preserving Socotra's natural heritage.
