Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY 2024) - Marib
Marib, Yemen – November 2024 – In a significant step towards building the future of youth climate action in Yemen, the second edition of the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY Yemen 2024) kicked off in Marib Governorate on Monday, November 18, 2024. The event was held under the generous patronage of Major General Sultan bin Ali Al-Arada, Vice President of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Marib Governorate. This pivotal climate event, organized by Marib Dam Social Development Foundation and Wen Impact Foundation, was hosted by Dr. Abd Rabbo Meftah, Undersecretary of Marib Governorate, and Dr. Mohammed Abadi, Director of the Environment Protection Office in the governorate. It witnessed the participation of about 60 young men and women from Marib and other governorates who have been displaced there.
The conference agenda, supported by Marib Dam Social Development Foundation, included rich discussion sessions on the impact of climate change on the most vulnerable communities, environmental issues and their impact on peace and security, and "Understanding the Impact of Climate Change on Marib: Climate Migration and Climate Adaptation Strategies." In addition, practical training workshops focused on "Sustainable Development Goals and Climate Action," and "Sustainable Agriculture: Challenges and Solutions related to Waste Management, Soil and Water Pollution." The conference aims to raise environmental awareness, highlight pioneering youth initiatives and projects in confronting the effects of climate change, empower youth to involve decision-makers in policy-making and effective climate action, and provide a platform for them to participate in developing alternatives and solutions and support youth-led green innovations and projects. The conference also provided a unique opportunity for policymakers, civil society representatives, and donors to interact directly with youth on climate change issues, and aims to prepare young climate leaders from Yemen to actively participate in global networks, particularly the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) which will be held this year in Azerbaijan. At the conclusion of the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change activities, Marib emerged as a model for governorates that do not surrender to the challenges of the climate crisis, and that hope lies in these young energies who are empowered with science and knowledge to draw a clear roadmap for Yemen's sustainable future.
